Kids and Tablets: Are You For or Against?
There are numerous studies that demonstrate that the excessive use of smartphones, tablets and video games creates addiction in very young children, as well as generating a series of dramatic effects on health and motor and cognitive development.
In fact, after the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Society of Pediatrics, the Italian Society of Pediatrics, in 2018, also stated that children from 0 to 2 years old should not be exposed to technology (so not only smartphones, but also TV and computers), from 3 to 5 the exposure should not exceed one hour a day, while from 6 to 18 a maximum of two hours a day.
Pediatricians are observing behavioral and learning disorders in young children exposed to television, smartphones or tablets: frustration, rejection of limits, language delay.
The non-profit Child Health Center in Trieste offers these little tips:
- Set a good example by limiting the use of digital devices (and TVs) when you are with your children. In particular, avoid using them at the table and using them to keep the children calm. - Limit the time your children spend in front of screens, both the small ones of smartphones and tablets and the large ones of computers and TVs. Avoid using them under the age of 2.
- Choose quality, age-appropriate programs, video games, or apps.
And above all, to help develop the ability to make appropriate use of digital technologies, more than prohibitions and controls, it is necessary to have transmitted and shared the pleasure of other activities. Such as reading, playing and musical experience.
The discovery of these technologies must not be premature: never before they go to kindergarten and never speed up the process.
